THE BEGINNING
We decided that it was time to move to a town where the schools were excellent and we wanted a larger home, so we started looking in the western suburbs. We drove around the towns with good schools and St. Charles was our choice. We had already built a semi-custom home and had decided that we were going to build a fully custom one for our next home. We wanted a home that totally fit our family.

CHOOSING A BUILDER
It was very important to us that we chose a builder who was upfront and willing to tell us bad news as well as good. We had a budget - so communication was critical. One of the ways we tried to save money was choosing an architect recommended by a friend. We ended up interviewing four builders. We got down the road fairly far with one and found that he was incredibly difficult to get in touch with. We then found Fred and immediately liked him. He came across as very honest - he didn't say yes to everything we asked for and provided us with realistic cost expectations. Fred was so up front that he initially said that he would not take our job because he didn't like building houses designed by architects with whom he had never worked. After discussing it some more, he eventually agreed to build our house.

BUILDING THE HOUSE
Our two biggest concerns were keeping on budget and meeting the completion date. At first the construction went fairly smoothly - Fred kept us well informed. In fact, we were finding that the most challenging part of building our house was making all the design decisions (type of brick, lighting, faucets, paint colors, ).

We did hit some snags due to the architectural design of the house - it was our architect's fault. Fred would try to soften the blow of the bad news by first giving us milk and homemade cookies. We soon learned that when we were being offered milk and cookies, it was going to be an expensive meeting! But you know what - the milk and cookies helped - it set a calm and relaxed tone which made digesting the news much easier.

One design issue was so big that it stopped worked on the house -- they were starting on the second story and the ceiling was not vaulted in the proper way. We were frantic because this meant not only risking missing the completion date; it also was costing us money. Fred was really terrific - he kept on the architect until he solved the problem AND he paid for some of the down time. We were shocked that he did this. We really did feel that we had made the right decision choosing him.

THE CLOSING
Despite the errors made by our architect, Fred and his team completed our house on time. We were thrilled beyond belief - not only was our house gorgeous, it was completed within a week of our original estimated closing date!!!

Fred has been just as responsive since we moved in the house as he was when we were building our house. We have been here 6 years and if I call him about anything, he calls me back immediately. I have never met another builder like him. He really listens to you and always has the time for you.
